Hi there, relating to efficient charities, I really think it's worth looking into how the Charity treats your money. What % will actually go the cause itself rather than being spent on 'admin' and 'advertising' if you dig, you'd be amazed. I think it's Marys Meals a UK charity that gives 93p in the £1 to the actual cause which is amazing,. They do this by relying a lot on volunteer work.
Just google Marys Meals and their story I think it explains. Also, Oak Furniture King I believe are building a kitchen shelter for Marys Meals to be provided in a school, donating from each sale on their website.0 -

If you look back at my posts in this thread, there are links to sources which claim low admin isn't a particularly useful criterion. In fact that book appears obsessed with ridiculing the concept.0 -
Someone has just published a book on the topic. A little video about it here.

You need to do some research work for finding an effective charity.
Great charities are ambitious, hence it indicates whether it measures its effectiveness, publishes full details of its research process clearly to the publich even its small. Finding a great effective charity relies on two factors, idea and and implementation. For a good charity, both the idea and implementation must be good.
If you're into formulae, think of it like this:
impact = idea x implementation.
Additionally there are few points that measures a effective charity:
1. What Do You Hope to Accomplish?
2. Are the Organization's Goals Clear and Measurable?
3. Who Are the Charity's Leaders?
4. What Are Similar Groups Doing?
5. What Do the Experts Say?
6. Is the Group Financially Stable?
7. What Is Your Gut Telling You?0 -
This bloke's just been on the radio (@23m45s), his book sounds like a good read.
"William MacAskill, Research Fellow at Cambridge University, has spent the last five years developing the philosophy of effective altruism, which applies data and scientific reasoning to the normally sentimental world of doing good. In the course of his research he’s come to the remarkable conclusions that most ways of making a difference achieve little, but that, by targeting our efforts on the most effective causes, we each have an enormous power to make the world a better place."0
