Speeding Ticket in Spanish Isles

Hello all,
Took the mrs on Holiday to Menorca in September and hired a car. Just the other day I recieved a Spanish Letter with the following sticker attached to the envelope

Inside there was a double sided document that was all in Spanish. Below:

And the back:

I asked a couple of friends who said that this kind of thing was a scam on programmes like The Real Hustle and that I should check it out first. Another friend said that often these fines could actually only be paid whilst in Spain.
It does look legit to me but €300 sounds like an awful lot and I wondered if anybody had any advice for me as I am nervous.
Will I get points on my Licence?
How would I pay it?
Is it legit or a scam etc etc?
Hopefully the helpful on here can advise.
Many thanks

The pics are a bit small
Did you hire a Citroen C3, why is the number plate blanked out?.....0 -
on the face of it - looks like a scam
spookily enough I caught something on R4 this a.m about brussels debating 'fines' in the eurozone. it seems the eurocrats would like all of us to be chased in our home countries, with info being 'shared'.
so it looks like you're safe even if the ticket's genuine.0 -
Blacked out because the information is on the internet.
Will resize pics tomorrow at work.0 -
Thanks Toronto. I would actually like to return but am I really supposed to translate the document into English somehow?
I'm not too sure what to do - pay or not0 -
sorry to bump this up but i've been busy. Thanks Toronto. I would actually like to return but am I really supposed to translate the document into English somehow?
I'm not too sure what to do - pay or not
the car was on hire.
what's stopping you from returning? your passport details? repeat hire? do you think the spanish police resources are that sophisticated they'll be waiting for you at the airport?
I still say this is a scam but maybe more research needed (for peace of mind).0 -
whoops. got to www.justlanded.com /spain.
the guardia make our police look like choirboys.
apologies for the poor speculative advice earlier.0 -
Try typing 'Spanish speeding fines' into Google and see what turns up.
There's even an old MSE thread on the subject at https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1034077
There is also a longish thread her http://www.myspain.es/forum/motoring-spain/22342-paying-speeding-ticket-spain-uk-can-i-ignore.html which seems to be better informed and even has instructions on how to pay online. Your ticket is likely genuine, at least €300 is the going rate for a Spanish speeding ticket.0
