What age did you get into Techie stuff?

Depends what you mean my "techie stuff"!
I was born in 1960 and started taking things to bits when I was 5. Had Meccano and Lego around that age and got into electronics when I was 10 or 11.
I was one of the first to get a ZX81 and went through the ZX Spectrum and BBC Micro before getting my first PC in 1991 (the floppy drive is still in my current PC!).
This led to a career in IT and I'm now the IT Manager in a High School.0 -
A calculator was unheard of when I was at school LOL, I bought a ZX81 when they first appeared, it's in the loft now.
I got into the IT industry aged 28 by accident. I work in sales but the jobs I have had you need to be fairly competent around the technology, never got into all that programming stuff though.
My FIL is 87 he has recently started to use the internet and email to keep in touch and my OH was over 50 when he started to use a PC.0 -
Only really gamed till about 20 (A-level computer science doesn't count as nerdy).
First real application of computers was in mechanical engineering, designing and testing CNC control software using punch tape.
Have been a sysadmin for last 12 years or so (AIX, SCO, BSD, Linux, Windows).
As for being too old to learn ?
No way. Get stuck in. Enthusiasm and being able to understand a manual are the skills you need. Doesn't everyone read the bat book on the throne.
NURSE: "Shouldn't it be sterilized, doctor?"
DR. BENWAY: "Very likely but there's no time."0 -
I got my first computer at the age of 9 (back in 1985) when I got given a Tandy TRS80 with 8" floppy drive and have been Techie minded every since.0

I started in the early 80's with a commodore pet on a friends PC who I met on cb radio. I then progressed on to a vic 20, c64 I would be in my late teens then. I went onto pcs in the early 90's with a 386sx and then 486dx 33 (Dan)0

zx81 when i was 10 years old, speccy soon after that, commodore amigas then took a break for nearly 10 years or so. Got my first PC about 7 or 8 years ago and never looked back. I've only got the job i've got now because of all the extra IT skills i developed just by being inquisitive and captivated by what can be achieved on a modern PC.

I am 40yrs and 168 months old and about 15 minutes ago I posted my first message (reply) after months of reading this board. Proves that you can never be too old to try, no doubt I will make more than a few errors but at least I will learn.
Gosh! am I now hooked?? Two posts!!Just call me 'eff'.
I registered when under the influence when everything seems funny.
I had received many shocks and it was all I was seeming to say. I'm still trying to pluck up the courage to visit the DFW to explain.
I am due a purple patch soon which will give me a flash of brilliance to come up with a stunning new name.0 -

Would be interested when BROWNTOA, WOLFMAN and PCHELPMAN started.

Started computing with an abacus in about 1961.

First bit of computing technology I owned was a Sinclair Scientific calculator using Reverse Polish Notation in 1973.
Who says it's a young person's game?
