You could advertise locally to train people in Sage in the evenings/weekends. Won't cost much to advertise once and see the response. You coudl put a free (?) ad in gumtree perhaps...
  • efrieze - I'm determined to go back to the gym if it KILLS me!!! I've got a review booked tomorrow night... need to get back into it!!!

Also been thinking about advertising locally for book-keeping or training etc... I don't know how much an ad costs. In fact I was all geared up to do this 2 weeks ago, then backed out (I'm so unconfident, it's truly pathetic. But I think if I'm ever gonna get out of this mess I need to get some confidence - now!!)

    Best, I love that line!!

he either does the over time or the spare room gets emptied and will be rented out to a lodger

    Rgc,

We don't have any unemployment insurance on the cards/loans - always flatly refused to pay it. From looking at the HMRC website, until I've been here 2 years, I won't get a penny in redundancy - only been here 18 months!!! Gah. But hopefully if this agency can come up with something it won't come to that... she says!!

    :T

    Hi

i agree there a waste of money ....it was just a thought in case you happened to have the insurance though

    best of luck
  • I feel really out of sorts today...

After my birthday in September me and the OH sat down and had a heart to heart about where our lives were going (we don't have any kids, both 32). We've always regretted not travelling when we were younger, and we've been talking about going to Australia for YEARS since we don't have many family ties or anything in the UK.

Anyhoo, long story short, we decided we were going to go for it. Even if it doesn't work we can always come back!

We need visas to work there so I was going to use my ACA qualification as the basis for this. Got all my exam certs etc together and sent off to the Institute for a Letter of Good Conduct.

Following the wake-up that we need to start clearing our debts, I thought I'd put this off for a bit - I have to pay AUS $ 450 (about £180 I think) for the Australian Institute to assess my qualifications for the visa. However, reading through the form again, it says the Letter of Good Conduct must be less than 3 months old. This means I have until 16th January 07 to apply.

Only way I can do this is to stick it on the c.c. :(

I'm sure if I need to get another letter from Institute later they'll charge for it. And I really, really wanted to get this application off the ground now I've set my heart on it. Am I mad? Must admit, our initial thoughts were, put the cost on the card because we'll be selling the house next year anyway and can pay it off with that...

I'm also annoyed cos I can't start looking for a part time evening job to bring some extra cash in, as I'm hoping I'm going to be getting some interviews lined up soon :(

Sorry for whingeing so much, feels like I'm getting nowhere right now.

  • Hi PP,

Are you thinking of going out there permanently ?

or just for travelling / working.

I suppose depending on what the answer is your strategy will be different.

Also whether you are in Aus or the UK you need to develop the MSE mentality.

would you both qualify for working visa's ? I think there is an expat forum on the web somewhere, where you can get answers.

    Best,
  • Hi best!

The intention is to go there permanently - the visa's for 5 years and during that time (after 4 year I think) we can apply for citizenship (I think), whereby we stay there for good.

However, I'm not blinkered enough to think that everything'll be better out there. We both think it'll be better for us, we love the sound of the lifestyle and the beaches of course! :D OH's uncle lives in Melbourne and he's been trying to get us to live there for a while. As much as I want to go, I know a lot of people can't settle as they get homesick etc - that's why I said if it doesn't work out we can always come back.

But yes, we are looking at going there permanently :)

  • Hi

Long time lurker, but just wanted to ask if you are claiming the ICAEW subs on your tax return? I think they fall under 'wholly, exclusively and necessarily in the course of your employment', and if your employer doesn't pay them then you can claim them as a deductible expense. (Check this out in the HMRC site first though!). If you're a few years qualified, you might be accidentally sitting on a small repayment!
  • Mrs Cupier - yep unfortunately I already do that! Well, I write to the tax office each year to tell them how much I've paid and they add it on to my tax code.

So no, no nice lump sum to look forward to :)

Thanks for the post though :)

  • well PP,

you need to research, research, research, plan, plan, plan.

and the more money you save and good habits you develop before you go the better position you will be in in the future.

I always thought you needed specilaist skills for the work visa e.g doctor, engineer but who knows they might be running low on accountants ;)

i think there is a forum out there https://www.britishexpats.com

or something could have the answers. Maybe post a few questions on there.

Heres to a money saving weekend

    Best,
  • best - thanks for the link, I'll look at that later. I found a good one called "Poms in Oz" which has been great for advice.

Accountancy is on the Skilled List and we are going on this basis - you need 120 points and I have 130 at the moment (till I get to 35!)

I want to get some of these debts cleared a) in case we don't get there, and b) to give us more cash to go with.

We've done loads of planning and I'm pretty sure I can get a job there once I get my visa - OH's uncle has always said we can stay with him till we get settled. I've been in touch with the Institute Contact Member in Oz, he says there's a good job market at the mo.

It'll be a while though - once the skills assessment comes back I can start the visa application but I've been warned this can take up to 18 months

So in the meantime I have to hope that I can get another job before I get made redundant!!!
