Debts and redundancy - help

  • Just a thought, if you have £4000 in savings would this affect any claim for JSA if you do lose your job? If so, you'd be better off putting it towards debt repayment rather than being penalised for having too much savings.
Donedoingdebt Lightbulb moment January 2000. Debt at highest approx £102,000. Debt now (October 2009 - absolutely fork all!!!)

  • Best, I haven't checked the PM yet (admittedly not sure how!) Work has gone crazy this afternoon and I've hardly had time to breathe!!!!

Never thought of cancelling the ASU? 3 months is a long time to wait I suppose. Not sure about the life insurance though - if one of us dies the other gets left with the loan and cc's? Not so much a prob for me but that'd be impossible for hubby...

tyllwyd - hmmm... £156 a month. Wait till I get home *seethe* I should've put that figure in front of him months ago!!!

Donedoingdebt - hiya - no idea if I'd be eligible for JSA? I've never been out of work and I haven't a clue if I'd be entitled to anything. Feel so thick :(

How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on... when in your heart, you begin to understand. There is no going back. There are some things that time cannot mend... some hurts that go too deep. That have taken hold.

if you get made redundant you will be entitled to JSA.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

That's ok  once you become a MSE addict you won't have no time for work:rotfl:

saying that I better do a bit of work myself this afternoon.

    Best,
  • Best - yaay, finally checked the PM! Thank you! A guy at work has just been telling me about a few local accountancy agencies too, so I'm going to have a trawl around the internet tonight to see who I can register with!!

lynzpower - thank you sooooo much!! I've just looked on the jobcentre site and it looks as if I'd be entitled to £52.75 a week JSA. I had no idea!!

Boy, got so much to do tonight. Going to:

Present hubby with list of his expenses!
Add up where our disposable income has gone over the last 4 weeks (not going to post THAT on here, that'd be far too embarrassing!!!)
Put my foot down and CANCEL some of these stupid payments

And trawl round the house looking for ebay-able stuff :)

I'm not sure which part of the UK you live in, but I don't think accountancy jobs are that hard to come by at the moment. I have a number of accountant friends (london-based) who tend to do contract work, but they're not really struggling to find work at the moment. It's not as easy as it was 6 months ago, sure but there's plenty of work out there. It depends of course on what branch of the accountancy field you're experienced in, again I don't know your specifics.

I'd register with some agencies, definitely. You might end up with a much higher offer regardless of whether or not the redundancy happens! Consider contract work as well, or temp-to-perm. My friends often take 6-12 month contracts and are inevitably offered a permanent position (which they turn down for the chance to get another high paying contract!)

Good luck with the hunt anyway.
  • climbgirl, I live about 10 miles from Leeds. I've been checking the Yorkshire Jobs today site and all the local papers and there's been NOTHING. I work in accountancy practice, I've tried industry but I only lasted 8 months, I hated it!!

Going to register with some agencies tonight, definitely. Like you say, might even get a better offer :)

  • PP,

this thread might be worth a look at in terms of getting your other half onside

Us blokes can be stubborn, so try and make it a team effort and make him think he thought of this whole MSE project in the first place.;)

That thread you linked to made me smile :)

Funny, this guy at work today, when I was whingeing about how OH won't help in trying to save money, said a quote that someone says in that thread - "You need to make sure you're singing from the same hym sheet"!!!

Anyway, I know that my mistake is in nagging him instead of using clever psychological manoevres on him, but I can't seem to bite my tongue!!!

I finally managed to get him to write down the number for Sky Broadband - if we switch to them we'll save £20 a month. He downright refuses to give up his beloved sodding Sky sports :rolls eyes:

Just wanted to say a huge Thank You for making me think about the life insurance! Looking into it last night, it looks like the medical condition I mentioned is costing us a fortune (our present cover is the whole job lot - life assurance, critical illness, permanent disability etc etc)

So last night I went onto the Cavendish Online site recommended on here in the Life Assurance section, and got a quote for life assurance only for £8.49!!! Bit of a saving from £52.89!! And the £52.89 won't pay out anyway if I die from said medical condition. AND I'm going to cancel the ASU insurance too - like climbgirl says, I can always temp if it comes to it. The ASU £19.50 pays out £500 a month - a third of my wage!!!! Gah.

Also got OH to agree to switch to Sky Broadband (he won't give up his Sky Sports), which will save us £20 a month.

    So, saved last night:

    20.00 on broadband
    44.40 on life assurance (hopefully)
    19.50 on ASU insurance

Total = £83.90 in one night!!!!!!!!!

Also registered with a recruitment agency and told them my worries about losing my job, they are going to ring me at lunchtime and discuss what opportunites they have that might be suitable!!!

    :)
