Social Fund Grant

I have had a back condition for over 15 years,in march 2010 i had an operation to remove some of a prolapsed disc, after the operation the surgeon said he removed 85-90% of the disc & i have degenerative, extensive nerve damage this has left me struggling to walk without a walking stick on a good day, crutches on a bad day & not being able to walk on my worse day.i have been told to apply for a CCG for an adjustable bed as i have to have help to get into & out of bed, when i can get out of bed, & a new washing machine as ours has broken & i am unable to carry anything that has any weight to it & cannot afford taxies to & from a laundrette.
i was refused a CCG as the items i asked for are " not priority items".after checking with Social Services, who had told me to apply for the CCG,they again told me that i am at"substantial risk when transferring to or from bed"& to ask for a review.
Just to clear things up, i am not just after all i can get, since April,i have applied for 60 jobs,no luck so far.

ask for an ot assessment at your local social services area team.
they can provision a bed stick or matress or pillow elevators which may be enough to help you in or out of bed
and may be able to advise on how to transfer items around your home including your washing#
nothing they will do about a broken washing machine though you could try freecycle.0 -
I agree with wolfehouse - SS should be able to supply you with items to adapt your current bed, it sounds like they are passing the buck. Also as you refer to ours I assume you do not live alone, and therefore someone else should be able to help with the washing?
Unfortunately the Social Fund does not have the resources it once had, you may have been offered a Budgeting Loan for a washing machine a few years ago, now you would be lucky to even get that.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Looked through my paper work, i had an assessment carried out on me by an OT & Social Services, both of whom have said i am at Substantial Risk transferring to & from bed & t hey both advised me to apply for a CCG.
I live with my wife & Daughter it was also OT & Social Services who advised me to ask for a washing machine. seems i have been given incorrect information, must admit with all the information i am getting i am starting to wonder what to do & where to go,never been in this position before as i have always said "while i can walk, i can work",so this is really hard for me to accept t hat i need help & has taken a long time to accept help, stubbornness i suppose.0
