New landlord requires credit check

I've been living in a rented house for 2 yrs, rented through a letting agency, pay via standing order every month and not missed a payment or been late. My letting agent is now changing to someone different. The new agent has now sent me a form to fill in which asks for last 6 mths payslips, bank acount details and previous addresses. This is a credit check they are wanting to do. Do I have to have this done as this must have been done with the previous agent? I don't want to have another credit check done against me.

I'd contact the LL directly and ask him if he's aware of these new checks. I'd wager he is not and that the LA are trying to a) cover their backsides and b) make some cash.
  • Yeah I'm going to contact him as they said he wants them. They have said there will be no charge though.
Do I have to have this done though as I've been renting here with another agent for some time?

Despite the change of LAs, the tenancy agreement is between you and your LL. If you are a reliable T then your LL is not likely to want to lose you because of an unnecessary paper chasing exercise by an over zealous new LA.

If your original Fixed Term has expired and you are currently on a Stat Periodic running from month to month then it may be that these checks are a precursor to the new LA trying to convince the LL that you should be signed up to a new Fixed Term. They can then try charging both you and the LL an admin fee . Edit - I note you day that the LA say it is the LL himself who wants the checks. Its always worth verifying that one

As Gwhiz says, do speak direct to the LL
