Banks count on your loyalty, which allows them to make money from yours on the assumption that you won't bother to switch to a decent bank.

Your loyalty is getting you peanuts in interest! Why not switch to a bank where you can do everything easily online and you get bonus interest for opening savings accounts and an ISA to go with your current account?

I have smile in mind but I'm sure there are equally good banks out there!
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

Halifax requires min £1000 p.m. credits. Barclays doesn't.
Halifax pays 5%+ only on first £2500. If you spend £2500 p.m. average balance is about £1250 and annual interest is just about £65 gross. Not a lot for those spending £2500 p.m. Otherwise, why on earth would you keep such a balance on your current account while there are a so many instant-access savings accounts around?

Yes, 5%+ is a good rate, but I'll never switch my account unless this rate comes with many other advantages. Does it?
I have few savings accounts with Halifax. Dealing with their branch staff while opening the accounts was a nightmare.
  • thinking of switching from barclays now.... see my post above, any help VERY welcome!

keep the minimum in the Barclays CA, use their online saver to keep a few thousand to switch funds into the CA when you need them, hold the rest of your savings funds in a high interest account elsewhere. Moving funds to and from the online saver is instant with no interest lost

high interest CAs should not be an incentive to switch banks

james, I too got fed up with pants interest from Barclays, been with them for 15 years. Switched to Lloyds Classic plus, get a good rate (plus they have an 8% saver) and all set up online. Got £50 cash bonus as a 'hello' too. Their call centre is no better/worse than any other I've experienced. This does require a £1000 minimum paid in though, and as my money is about to take a hike downwards, I'll probably be looking at A&L or Cahoot. I've given up on loyalty. Hope this helps.

I also have a barclays current account that I've had for nearly 10 years - it was my first proper bank account really and I wouldn'y close it. I would suggest that you don't close yours either after such a long time as having such a long-standing relationship with a bank is good for your credit rating. At the same time though I now also have the much better alliance & leicester account with a good rate and a regular saver so I have the best of both worlds so to speak and just use the barclays account for a few transactions.

    Regards
