Work has short paid me half my wages!

hi

I'm looking for a bit of advice on my rights in this situation.
As normal before payday at work i hadnt received my wage slip so until the day it self i was blissfully unaware I'd literally been paid less than half my normal wages.
The accountant at work was great she worked out the problem and how much i was owed it all came down to the fact i had dropped some hours and mistakes happened from there so i thought great....give me my money.

She then went on to say "so the money will be in next months wages"...i need it now i do have bills!
I asked for the money asap and she said she have to speak to the manager but he may say no, with xmas down the road as well!!

Can they really put me in this situation? :(

No. But other than get your employer to resolve it there is little you can do because legal action would take months - and it would have been paid by then! You need to go back and say that you accept a mistake has been made and it is being sorted - but Christmas is also coming for you and you need the money. THis is their problem and sorting out an advance or some such thing shouldn't be hard

Well technically no (unless you have agreed to a clause in your contract agreeing that any errors will only be corrected next month).

However this is not an easy situation to get any redress if they do not co-operate. You could, in theory, make a claim for any losses you suffer as a result. You would have a legal duty to minimise those losses for example using savings rather than incurring bank charges.

Far better in the circumstances to speak to somebody senior and ask nicely - at least in the first instance.

It should be easy for them to give you an advance of about the right amount. Often this shows on the pay system as "loan" and is correct on the next payslip.
  • Your employer is probably reluctant to pay you now, instead of as part of next month's wages, because doing the payroll costs money. However, it is their mistake and you should not be out of pocket as a result. Your employer should give you an advance, but this can be on a weekly basis. I would speak to the manager and explain that you cannot manage without your wages.
