Canon Pixma printer USB failure

Options
My Canon printer now gives me an error message when connected saying something like "usb failure with this device".

I've tried connecting to my laptop as well as desktop and get the same error on both.

The printer has a Pictbridge connection and will still print fine from a camera connected via that.

Is there any way to fix the usb issue, or do I need a new printer?

Try a new usb cable. Re-install printer drivers from manf. website.

There's a good chance it's the cable, but one other thing to try if you haven't already: Unplug the printer at the mains and leave the internal power supply for a few minutes so that it is fully discharged, then plug back in.

It sounds daft, but it works with some USB chipsets (e.g. SiS) that get themselves into an unknown state, and are kept powered on even when the printer itself is off.
