Making a cheap dog flap/dog door

Hello,
We had a dog flap in the porch door a few years ago but when it broke we boarded up the hole and haven't used it since. Now we would like a dog flap again but don't have the money to go out and buy one - so i'd like to have a go at making one. Has anybody done this before?
We don't really need to have a frame for it like the proper ones do, just something that will hang in the hole and flap both ways. I have heard about doing it with a rubber mat or old carpet, the problem i have is figuring out how to hinge something so it goes both ways?
Any help would be much appreciated,
Thanks.
