Still havn't figured it out- which is better on constantly oil or convector heater?

I still don't know what is best and am still confused as to whether I should get an oil radiator or not.

I've read generally they are best to heat over long periods and generally the safest.

My circumstances have changed somewhat in that as it's got colder and colder and colder! rather than being on for a couple of hours a day my electric convector has had to be on all through the day.

It's got so cold that I even wake up in the night and am unable to get back to sleep cos the cold messes up my sinuses and gives me a sore throat which goes as soon as I turn the heating on again.

So with that in mind I'd prob want it on all day and even on low all night so pretty much constant while the cold is really trying to whip my !!!.

In this case would the oil thing be better?

I think I'd be more comfortable with an oil radiator type on through the night than the convector bar ones for safety reasons.

Thoughts?

They are exactly the same. The oil radiator is a nicer heat and safer as you say but the capital cost makes the convector one cheaper. Get an electric blanket for night time heating. No point having space heating when all the heat from a blanket stays under the covers. They consume 65 watts on medium and cost about 7p per night to run depending on your tariff.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Thanks.

    What does capital cost mean?

I thought elec blankets aren't supposed to be left on while in the bed, only to warm it before you get in?

The trouble is it's my tonsils that are screwing me up and it's my head being cold that causes it. Perhaps wearing a hat will do.- I already wear a scarf to cover the tonsils and neck.

My body is actually warm enough in the bed but because my head sticks out that is the part that is getting cold and causing the tonsil/sinus troubles :rotfl:

Now I write it finding some sort of headwear solution would be alot more economical than heating the whole room just for my head.

Will experiment and see what I come up with.

I seem to have the same problem as you in that my head is getting cold at night and stopping me sleeping! My body feels warm as I use an electric blanket, they can be used all night, most of the modern blankets come with a "warm up" setting and an "all night setting", so they are safe to keep on! Last night I woke up with hot feet, but a cold head, I even had a headache this morning due to the cold. My hubby says I should put my head under the covers, but this stops me from breathing, so not an ideal solution! I was thinking of wearing a hat in bed!

    Exactly. :)

Since we are on the subject I even find it irritating if the covers are too close to my nose it feels like it's restricting my breathing.

It is a really tough life :).

The scarf I wear pretty much 24/7 also has a hood which is nice. I used it last night I think, can't remember but I still woke up this morn. Will have to keep experimenting.
  • I do wear a hat in bed - a soft fleecy (and not too tight) 'beanie hat'

Just keeps the top of my head warm when I'm sitting in bed reading etc.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • I read an interesting article about keeping warm in winter which said that the head is one of the or even the biggest part of the body which leaks heat and you don't even feel it getting cold.

    Hi,
Everyone makes their own choices in these things. Just want to pass on the infomation that our bodies have their own electromagnetic field which is seriously disrupted by the EMF from something like an electric blanket (or a plugged in radio alarm clock, or computer etc near your bed). This is associated with increased cancer risks.

    From a quick google -
    Electric blankets and breast cancer
A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology reported that electric blankets are associated with an increased incidence of breast cancer.
The study, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, involved the analysis of 304 cases of African-American women (aged 20 to 64) diagnosed with breast cancer who lived in one of three Tennessee counties. Another 305 African-American women without breast cancer were analyzed for the purpose of comparison. Information on the use of an electric blanket or heated water bed and other risk factors was collected through telephone interviews.
The researchers observed that the breast cancer risk associated with use of an electric blanket increased with the number of years of use, the number of seasons of use and the length of time of use during sleep. The researchers concluded that the use of electric blankets may increase breast cancer risk in African-American women aged 20 to 64 years.
