External hard drive

I had a maxtor external hard drive fail on me about 3 years ago (split into lots of partitions or something  ), anyway I was told by Maxtor and a friend that there was no way to get the info of it.

Anyway, I decided to keep the drive as it has photos of my little girl on it and I kinda hoped that technology may make it possible to get the info of the drive some time in the future.

So my question is, has anything changed over the last few years that may make it possible to get the photos of the drive? Is there a company I could send it to? would it be affordable ?

Cheers

  • Use this, works great for me. It scans your hard drive sector by sector:

If that doesn't work, you can go to PCWorld; they have a data recovery service.

You might want to try SpinRite as it has a good rep.

I had the hard drive go on a previous PC, luckily I didn't lose anything of great importance, just caused a lot of inconvenience.
As soon as I bought a new PC, the first thing I did was to put a second hard drive in it AND I am getting an external hard drive. I am afraid all my digital photos and family history research is just to valuable to entrust to one hard drive.
It doesn't cost a lot for total peace of mind.
  • You may want to buy Spinrite 6, it can fix your hard drive.

EDIT: Didnt notice that a member ready posted this.

spinrite will only work if the disk is spinning and recognised by the bios. It's not cheap, about £50 ish depending on exhange rate.
