British Gas - Default Dispute

Hello Members,

I have a default placed in my credit report by British gas trading for £45. The bill says 20£

I had my electricity supplied by British gas as well. British gas owe me, 50£ for the electricity account.

I moved home 2 years back. They donot have my forwarding address but have my email address and mobile contact number.

I haven't received any communication from them for the unpaid amount-either them to me or vice versa and all of a sudden, i am seeing this default notice on my credit report.

What i found from my old bills(i found them in one of my files, luckily)is that i have two differrent customer numbers for the same address. My Gas account is in Default and my electricity account, they owe me money.

I do not know how to approach this issue. I never had the intention of cheating my supplier, as i thought, that the accounts are tied to me and the difference in amount will get balanced out(and they would still owe me money).

Please advice me how i can approach this issue? Is there any address to whom i can write to specifically within British Gas.

Thanks

    1) You obviously were not on a dual fuel tariff so they would have always been 2 seperate accounts.
    2) Why did you not provide a forwarding address for them to send the final bills?
    3) Just phone their normal customer service number.
    4) Don't expect the default to be removed.

They won't use one account to pay the other. I've already been told this as I am in a similar position with one account needing payment and the other having excess. Just call them, as Spiro says, and sort it out. You will need to pay the one account and they will send you a cheque for the other.

I was out of the country for 3 months and i was not having an address other than my online account.

    4) Don't expect the default to be removed.
As i have mentioned earlier, i was not deliberate trying to cheat BG. Is it not the fact that they can look at my issue on its own merit.

I had 2 account numbers (Customer reference numbers) when I was with British
gas for electricity and gas so mustn't have been on dual fuel either.

I have never heard of Britsh Gas using set-off to reclaim outstanding monies but it does not seem unreasonable practice.
If they have your email address, you must have registered to manage your account online ? If not, I'd try and register your account(s) online with the address they are for to see if they are still active and then having logged in, use the online contact form to try and resolve the issue, that way you don't have to speak to them, fielding awkward questions. You have 4 more years to claim it back.

I was on a dual fuel. Finally, British Gas has understood the issue and after going through the facts they have removed the defaults. hurray

Dual fuel just means both fuels supplied by BG. You would always have 2 different account numbers unless you were signed up to combined billing. You should be able to ask them to recall your debt back so they can use the electric credit ( if it is correct) to wipe it off.
