I'm tied between the idea of a series 3 landrover and "winter" tyres but have a question with regards to tyre sizes.
My car has 165/70 R13 79T tyres on it just now. I've seen a set of 4 155/80 R13 79T and wondered if anyone had any idea if these would go straight on?
I've a slight fear they could foul the arches?
They're listed as autograss/mud tyres, I'm assuming they'd cope with a wee bit of the white stuff.

Try this...

IIRC you need a soft compound and lots of sipes for good performance in the snow.0 -
Two good articles here

The new tyres are under an inch bigger, so that's less than 1/2 half in the wheelarch, and they're narrower, so can't see them fouling anything.
Whether they work on snow or not......0 -
Cheers, looks like they'll fit and although not as good as snow chains, are better. The speed ratings of the standard tyres arnt mentioned so they must not be "summer" tyres.0

M&S tyres may well be OK in snow up yo a point but unless they are snowflake marked will still be of normal rubber compound so will IMO be no better than ordinary for winter driving, however if they're dirt (pun) cheap they might be worth a punt.
I wish i had your original sizes on my car, brand new proper winter's very cheap..

As for Landrover's, yes capable vehicles if on the right tyres but you'll spend every spare minute keeping the thing going.0 -
The ad for the ones I saw dont mention the snowflake and the difference between the site above and the ones I saw is only £30.
The landrover was more the idea of getting something old with character that could be a rolling restoration and would be useful right now.
I'm having no problems getting around, the wee tyres on the car are coping no problems at the moment, I think it would be the ground clearance that would do me in if there was much more.0 -
I have a Land Rover and it is very good in deep snow.
Parts are cheap and they are very easy to work on. The heaters on the earlier models are poor.
Reliability? Well, mine's 55 years old and I think nothing of taking it on holiday towing a trailer tent. So far, it has never failed to get me home.0 -
I like old vehicles of any description and I think with classic insurance it would be fine to have it sittin around and fixing what needs done as it needs done.
Theres a couple reasonably local just now, a 1965 petrol and an 82 diesel.0
