bt problem

i have recently been declined a bank account, and have been trying to think of the reason why this has happened.

it may have been slipping into my unauthorised overdraft twice, or missing my first car payment as i was told the incorrect date by the car salesman (i should have double checked). i am a lodger at the minute with no bills in my name, and on thinking a bit harder i remembered that i was in charge of the phone bill when i was a student between 2003 and 2006.

so, tonight i went to the bt website, as i remember i used to be able to log-on (although the bills were always paper so that it could be brought to the post office to be paid by anyone). my details were still saved in the log-in boxes, so when i clicked the button i fully expected it not to work. worringly i was able to log-in where it showed an account number and the associated phone number.

i phoned bt in 2006 to say i would be moving out of the property, however i was the only one moving out and my flatmates kept the phone number and paid the bill. i am certain that it was no longer in my name.

is it normal for me still to be able to sign into the account? i have completed a bt online form, but will ring again tomorrow. i am worried that they will somehow want to make me liable for a bill for an account that i have not been associated with for over 4 years!

'Moving out' does not close the account. Did you cancel the service and receive a final bill?
If you are concerned about your credit rating then the first thing to do is check your record at experian.

  • Thanks for the response macman. Thankfully I have managed to ascertain that the account was fully closed in 2006. They would not delete my details from the system though, so my details are still held with an account number (even though I don't have an account).

I have signed up for Experian but am awaiting my pin number in the post so that I can access it.
