selection process

can certain people be selected for redundancy before a consultation period starts
i work in a department of about 100 employees. we all do the same job, but according to the latest rumour, those who have been selected for redundancy will be getting a letter in the post next week
as yet, we have had no formal notification that redundancies are in the offing anyway, let alone certain people have been selected
i was under the impression, that if you all do the same job in the same dept, then all employees have to be considered equally. so shouldnt that mean everyone should be getting a letter informing them of possible redundancies?

i contacted union (UNISON) re: selecion process and was told that many things are taken into consideration e.g. attendance, performance, sickness and many other factors (but i cant remember them!). i was also told if i was selected i could appeal against unfair selection. Maybe you should contact your union for advice?
P.S. i live in Scotland
Good luck0 -
Only the job can be made redundant not the person and there are seperate rules governing a large number of employees like this. A bit unlikely but if you see anyone left out of the process who is doing the same job as you make it known at the time. If they then don't include them you have an unfair dismissal claim. Pre-selection will also lead to a claim but you will need firm evidence. Don't listen to rumours.0

If more than 20 posts to be made redundant then there has to be a minimum of 30 days consultation. Any less than this just has to have "meaningful" consultation but there is no time limit.
If a number of people do the same job and there is a requirement to lose some of the posts then there should be an agreed selection matrix which can cover some of the factors identified by bonnawumin.
If you all do the same job then there should be consultation with elected representatives or union recognised representatives.
Wait to see what the next stage is from the Company and update us on here, we can then advise on your next step.0 -
Most redundancies are predetermined behind the scenes in advance.
Sensible companies think through what they are going to need to do to save or restructure the business
They have thought about where they need to be, what the process they will use, what the selection criteria are and how they would be applied(to make sure they work*).
In some cases this will be discussed in advance with union or reps(but usualy kept quiet)
Then they will engage in consultaion, and for it to be meaningfull they need to eneter dialog and make their case and listen to the suggestions to try and avoid the redundancies or eliminate the impact.
Good reps/union may be able to make a difference but often good companies have allready looked at the options so there will only be a few changes if there are issue over the selection pools or criteria.
It is crazy to think otherwise.
* make work means keep the people they want and get rid of those they don't want where they care, the rest you are just a number on a list.0
