TalkTalk & Debt agency

Hi All,

Thought I would seek some other consumers advice, possibly someone who has been through similar, it seems as though many people have problems.

We moved into our rented house in April, there was a talktalk line in the property and we agreed to take ownership of the line from the landlady. After weeks of talking to different people both myself and the landlady gave up of transferring the line and I paid for a BT line to be installed. We heard nothing more from TalkTalk.

Last Friday a letter from a debt collection agency arrived requesting £170 with no further details as to why.

I spent over an hour on the phone this morning to people all over the world with different stories. It turns out I 'owe' £21.99 for line rental plus broadband from May to Oct (when they cut us off) plus £60 contract cancellation.

I recieved no communication from TalkTalk when the line was 'transferred', I recieved no communication regarding outstanding payments and no communication as to being cut off. When a manager was questioned on the phone this was due to the landlady requesting an online account so due to personal preference no letters were sent? This actually turns out to be a lie as the landlady has paper bills from before April. The person before I spoke to the manager stated he had records of bills being sent to the address, another lie.

Where do I stand? Who do I complain to? I've got a real fear of a bailiff turning up plus our credit score cant be affected as I'm in the process of arranging a mortgage.

Thanks in advance

Andy

Except he isn't a customer of TalkTalk.

As far as I can see, they failed to deliver any sort of service or any transfer of anything, so it is hard to see that there is a contract in place, let alone that early cancellation could be charged for.

This sort of thing appears to be getting more and more common with TT now.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

  • Thanks for the replies all.

We've now recieved another letter from the debt agency listing out all of the charges if we go to court (which I'm more than happy to proceed with).

We never used any of their services as the BT line was installed.

As far as I'm concerned they failed to provide any level of customer service or communication

    Yeah, yeah.

I'm taking it that the agreement was with the Landlady. If the OP was actually successful in arranging the transfer, then he would not have needed a BT line. I really cannot see that TT have done enough to actually establish a contract - like even beginning to fulfil it

Read on !! the OP then confirmed no service was actually provided but originally that was not clear, the TT line could still have been live and using it could have made them a customer by default.
