CCTV - what do I need to look for?

Has anyone bought a good cctv system that was reasonably priced?
My neighbours were burgled this afternoon and it's made me think about stepping up on security. Someone told me about a friend of theirs who had an application for his iphone which connected to his cameras. He was burgled and was able to see what they were up to on his phone.
Need something reasonably priced (preferably under £350) and it doesnt have to be wireless as my husband would be well capable of installing it.
Will be hiding anything of value tonight just in case they return to the area.

you will need a dvr for recording and however many cameras.
Usually atleast two, one at the front and the other at the back

and these cameras will be fine http://www.cctvdirect.co.uk/products/Twilight-FLD-High-Resolution-540-TVL-Vandal-IR-Dome-%252d-White.html
you can budget for that price

you will need to buy some cable and power which is cheap enough. phone them and ask them they will tell you what you need. have used them many times0
