Renting with poor credit

Sorry never rented before, have debts(paying throught dmp) hubby does not know if you rent through an agency or privately, do they look up credit rating etc, very worried, please advice:(

Been calling around estate agents at the weekend and one of the main ones in my area which had a few flats I liked, and all they said was to give them a list of the flats and they would check with the landlords and I would maybe need 1-3 worth of rent upfront.0
