Recall training is vital. You may not intentionally let your dog off the lead - he could slip his collar or the lead could break (I've had both happen to my dog), so you need to work on recall all the time. I let mine off when I am in a safe environment, so enclosed, away from roads. I know of someone with a small jrt who was chased by another dog into the road and killed - you need to make sure that he will return whatever happens. Additionally, be careful of him following a rabbit down a hole..... lots of small terriers lost that way :(

The other thing that can work is actually running away from him. Get his attention, run in the opposite direction (shouting a command that you ONLY use for recall, such as 'come' etc) and sometimes they'll panic and chase after you, then lots of praise when he catches you.

In future when he hears his name and the recall command, he'll sprint back through fear of you doing a runner and leaving him behind!
  • lots of practise - try the training lead to start and build your confidence and trust in him. My pup used to run off on me, instead of chasing her (she thought we were playing if I done that) I did n't move or kept walking, when she came back I called her towards me and gave lots of praise and more recently treats.

Terriers are lovely but are often little swines at recall. You are not being cruel keeping your dog on a lead if he won't recall. Their tiny doggie minds get filled with scents of bunnies or other interesting stuff and frankly they cannot even remember you exist during that period. A long training line is the way to go, you can buy them cheaply from ebay. I have a 50 foot one, looks excessive on my very small terrier, but although it allows him the freedom to wander and sniff, he isn't going anywhere! We have started to take him out with it on and now have progressed to dropping it, safe in the knowledge that we will be able to catch up and reel him in at need. The lead also slows him down a bit when he does decide he'd like to go in another direction!

    I've been Money Tipped!

I was thinking of asking on freecycle if anyone has a field/ large garden, do you think this would be ok?

Only place i dare to let him off is the beach.

Fields are often not JRT proof. Hedges even quite large dogs can often fit through and lots of JRT can get through stock fencing. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind the occasional dog walker with sociable, play ful dogs joining me and my dogs in one of our fields for a walk and a play, it would jazz things up for them too, and though mine have good recall I am increasingly put of walking in ''public'' walking places as people and some dogs get upset by their large size and speed when running/playing. But they love playing with other dogs and miss the gun dogs we used to daily walk with.
