Connecting a scanner

I have just been given a Umax Astra 1220U but I can't get it to work, I have Windows XP Home.

I have downloaded a driver vs355u.exe, but it is still not working.

I had one of those - threw it out when the lamp failed. It was cheaper to buy a new scanner (e.g. the Canon Lide models are excellent), which is much smaller and nearly silent in operation - unlike the Astra which seemed to grind away while scanning.

Did it work with the previous owner's computer?

Yes, apparently it belonged to an artist who passed it on to a computer shop, (who advertised it on freecycle along with some other compter stuff), he said I just needed a USB lead, which I had on my printer, and to download a driver from the internet.

You could always just uplug the usb power lead whislt the computer is running then plug it back in again and let the computer find it, then add the driver, make sure its the driver for your model and make

It passed the test scan OK

It has downloaded VistaScan, but error comes up when I do a preview in preparation to scan.

I have got it working by ticking the compatible with Win 98 on the properties box.

Only thing is I can't find where it has downloaded to on my hard drive. docume~|\...TMP6.TIF

Does anyone know where the scanned document gets saved on your hard drive, cos I can't find it.
