Self catering in the Lake District

Taking my wife and son to the lake district for the new year but am struggling to find anywhere decent to stay.
Any suggestions or recommends would be great!
We are looking for a self catering place, ideally a log cabin or cottage but not sited on a park.
I am not familiar with the lake district but assume the most popular lake is windemere so perhaps near there if possible.
Thanks in advance!

i know you said not on a park buts a very small park. we stayed last may and it was beautiful. in a valley next to the river, some lovely walks around and also walkable into keswick town, we stayed in a caravan there as we had a dog, but they have converted watermill and lodges to stay in

Keswick's good if you want plenty of choice for things to do, places to eat as it's one of the bigger towns (afaik). it's towards the northern end, but there's lots of good walks within the area for a range of abilities.
There's loads of self catering places in Keswick, try Holiday-Rentals.co.uk or http://www.cumbrian-cottages.co.uk/0 -
Have a look here http://www.thegoodlifecottageco.co.uk/index.asp
and here http://www.wheelwrights.com/index.php
and google for Cumbrian Cottages, Heart of the Lakes, Lakes and Dales.
My recommendation is The Good Life Cottage Co - nice people with 40 years family experience as an agency......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Have a look at this site

I've stayed there a few times and it's a brilliant place. It's a old working farm and the cottages are in the converted barns. They've got log fires which would be perfect for the time of year you want to go. The views are amazing and there's some really nice walks from there too if you like that. It's really peaceful, not somewhere to go if you want to be having a party every night but perfect to get some peace and quiet.
It's by Ullswater but it's not far from anywhere really.0 -
My wife and I go here every year. Lovely quiet location, great cosy pub nearby, view of the forest and Skiddaw from the windows.

Hi Mikeopvc - some great places to stay already listed.
Depending on the age of your son you may also like to consider some self catering alternatives such as Yurts - you can find a good description and more about these on the Discover Cumbria. co. uk website which normally come with a wood-burning stove - perfect for keeping you warm during the winter!
Other alternatives range from Youth Hostels - many of which now have family rooms
Tipi camping (you would need to check if they had wood burning stoves
Static Caravans
Camping Pods - No heating but they are thermal lined to make them cosy
Self Catering cottages - all sizes and many can be booked for part weeks / weekends
Camping Barns are also popular in Cumbria - but these would proably be too large for your needs unless you don't mind sharing.
What a great way to bring in the New Year - hope that you find the perfect self-catering accommodation0 -

Thanks all for your suggestions so far, it seems there are plenty of places to choose from.
Slight change of plan now though as my wifes sister and her 2 children are also coming, oh and not to forget the mother in law.
So will need a bigger place to keep us all cosy.0 -
You'll have a great time, I'm sure. Lots of cottages in the Lakes have woodburning stoves or open fires...have a fantastic time0
