Plasterboard in garage

Options
I just put up some insulation in my garage well my junk room, as the car as never been inside. When I took down the ceiling in the garage the plaster board was two layers of normal plasterboard but not fire resistance. I have now got some fire resistance plasterboard which is 12.5mm think and pink, but I was wondering do I have to fit two layers of plasterboard or is the fire resistance plaster board OK to put up on its own.

By the way my sons bedroom is above the garage and we do keep a washing machine and freezer in the garage.

  • I don't know for sure. I had to put 2 layers of plaster board in my garage.
I thing i do know is that you need a 30min fire rateing. So check the spec on the board you have.

You should be OK with the fire line board on it own.

I guess it takes 2 sheets to get the 30 mins fire resistance thats required for building regs but as what you are doing is presumably not subject to building control inspection its up to you.

fireline board (the pink stuff) should be as good as double sheets of standard plasterboard if i remember - don't have my white book handy...

When I converted my garage into a flat I had to double board the ceiling at the insistence of the Building Inspector. Actually, now I think about it that does not make sense. Why would double boarding be necessary if the place was being converted into a habitable room from its previous use as a garage.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • Two sheets are needed to prevent failure of the joints in a fire, and also prevent exhaust gases seeping through - that is why two layers are cross bonded - even if one if fire-line board

You also need intumescent seal around the perimeter and around any penetrations

Failure to do this to current standards will invalidate any house insurance for related claims, and it does not matter if the garage is used for storage and not parking
