Catarrh

I have suffered from this for bleedin' years! Since I was a kid.

The quack has before prescribed Sudafed but I'm wondering whether there are any other cheaper alternatives or whether there is anything I can do to minimise the affects?

Don't mean to put everyone off their dinner but every morning I must spend five minutes coughing up all the crap/mucus that has built up overnight! It even makes me wretch which ain't nice!

Can anyone advise?

Ta very much! :)

  • Hi I have the same problem and take Sudafed like vitamins. For years I have read diet books that say 'cut down on dairy products as it produces loads of phlegm (mucus)' I have never been able to do this as love milk in my tea etc. However I have recently cut down on cheese and have definitely seen a decline in the amount of mucus. When I had cheese and crackers at my dads the other night, i spent the next couple of days with terrible sinus pain.

Not sure if its a co-incidence or not but am trying to persevere. (dont think i will ever give up milk) goats/soya milk is atrocious.

Hope this helps. If not, I am stumped as well.

ps. I was told to 'steam' twice a day but could never be bothered!!
  • Thanks blossom. :)

Know what you mean about the milk. Can always feel it coating my throat as I drink it! _pale_

But I love it too much aswell! :p

Do you know whether the supermarkets or anywhere do their own brand of 'Sudafed'. Just thought it might be a bit cheaper?
  • not sure, will investigate and come back to you.
  • My daughter says ask pharmacist for cheaper option. Its best to go to small independent chemist and ask the pharmacist direct. Larger chemists sometimes just have sales people in front who dont know much about the different medicines on offer so only offer branded names.
  • A friend of mine swears by steaming with menthol crystals. It's supposed to help clear your sinuses, worth a try :) You can get a little tub from the chemist for about 75p

Is that regular thing like once a day?

Do you know if it's better at night or morning? :)
  • I'd say try it for a couple of days before you go to bed. It may help stop it from building up whilst your sleeping.

My GP advised me to turn the shower on and sit in the steam every night to help mine.

Try Potters Catarrah Pastilles or Numark Bronchial Balsam. Sometimes seems to clear or try Otovent (effectively blowing up water bombs with nostrils) to equalise sinus pressures and get rid of catarrah.

Seems a bit weird, but a lot of ENT specialists prescribe it and customers buy it for around £8
