Lime plaster advice please?

We are waiting for a plasterer to come and do ceiling in sons room. Its in the eaves and has a dormer window. The ceiling is old lath and daub and is quite ropey. Plasterer is going to board on top of it to avoid the whole house being full of soot. We have a problem area though - round the window. It has a triangle of old lime plaster above it and forming a peak around it. Hubby does not want to repair this with anything modern (house is sandstone and anywhere the previous occupants have bodged with modern stuff we have had problems). What can we do with it? Its not bad enough to chip off and not good enough to paint.
I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent. :rotfl:
