apprentice redundancy

hi there,
Afriend of mine has just completed his apprenticeship. He has been approached by a manager regarding his position. He may be made redundant even though his company has recently employed a person doing a similar job we he was more than capable of fulfilling.
Does an apprentice have any rights. He has been there for 3 years and various people have joined the company since he started, who do the same job. He has a good record with zero sickness and disciplinary records. Should his company offer voluntary redundancy first?
