Cost of childminder for "wraparound care"

It's looking like I'm going to have to employ a childminder to pick up my son from school around 3 days a week. I'd require care from 3:10 pm to around 6 pm. Does anybody have an idea of how much this will cost?

Considering that I pay around £1000 a month for full-time daycare for my daughter, I'm thinking that £200-£300 a month would be reasonable for after-school care for my son. Have I got this about right?

Depending on where you live it could be 2:50 - 5:50 an hour . My childminder wont work past 5:30 but many do work up 6. Most childminders will feed the children , some at an extra cost some included in the price.

It is all down to finding the correct minder. But you also need to consider the holidays , will the minder look after your son then , if so you need to come to some arrangement with them.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks. Holidays wouldn't be an issue - I put my son into a holiday club.
  • Does your school have an afterschool club - ours runs from 3-6pm for £7.50 including a sandwich/drink.

hve you checked other primary schools, high school, college, council etc... Our local high school nursery has a after-school club and they use the high school bus to go and pick kids up from various schools around town.

Our afterschool club from 3:20 to 6:00 is £5.00

I charge £3.50 per hour. Going on the hours of 3pm to 6pm (it's tidier), that's three hours a day, so £10.50 per day. You will probably have to pay a childminder a retainer for the holidays as she will be keeping the place open. Having said that, I don't charge for holidays for the children I know are definitely term time only as it makes my life a bit quieter during those times.

I think the other primary school in town runs an after school club, but I'd be surprised if they ran a bus round to my son's school to collect any kids from there. And at age 5 he's a bit young to be getting himself around on his own. Sounds like I need to look up lists of local child-minders. £10.50 a day doesn't sound too bad to me...

Just an update - I've found a childminder who charges £4.25 an hour, which would be around £13 a day for 3 hours care. This seems reasonable to me - she also has a few toddlers during the day and picks up another two kids from my son's school as well (including one in his class). As a bonus she's also just around the corner from my daughter's nursery, so picking them up in the evening will be easy.

I was beginning to get a bit worried because I'd contacted around 5 childminders and none of them had been able to help me - however one of them must have passed on my details to this lady as I got an email out of the blue yesterday afternoon :). She's rated "excellent" by Ofstead and she seems to have a wide range of activities on offer (more than I can offer if I've got the boy at home with me when I'm meant to be working anyway...)
