Best new Wi-fi Router

Hi,
We have a router provided by SKY that I think is on the way out. It has been somewhat mistreated this year (basically coated time and again with builders dust) and while it still works, it keeps needing to be re-booted, and can be pretty unreliable.
The building work also included some fairly hefty new walls, so I think that is also causing a problem with access throughout the house. But, this is separate to the wi-fi router problems I guess. It was always a bit weak and we didn't get great reception in the garden.
So I was wondering if the collective wisdom here could advise on a new one. And as a side issue, can anyone confirm that I can just replace the SKY provided (black) one with any old wi-fi router.
So, we want a router that is
- powerful
- reliable
- nice and fast
- easy to use to block sites if I want to.
- Not super expensive, but since we rely on the internet so much, it is something I am willing to pay extra for if it makes a difference.
Thanks!

according to sky's t&c, you are only supposed to use the router they supplied. Also, they do not give you easy access to your ISP username and password (the ones you need to authenticate with their DSLAM/MSAN in the exchange). HOWEVER, most of the sky routers have been cracked, so you can extract the user/pword from them to enable you to set up any router for your service.
It would help if you could post which make/model of the one you have currently.
Or, you could call sky's tech support and tell them it's on the way out, they'll take you through a menu of carpy diagnostics, and tell you there's nothing wrong (probably) in the hope of them sending you another one.
The wifi distribution through the house would probably be tackled by adding a repeater to you network to extend the wireless range, something like this

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
