Central heating problem

My central heating only works if the water is on as well.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Thanks.

It would help to have a little more information.

ie - Boiler make and model for a start.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • It's a Potterton Suprima.

I can turn the water on to heat up on it's own, but the heating will only work with the water turned on as well.
It wasn't like it last winter.

Look for a 3 port mid-position valve in your airing cupboard. If you have one it will be the microswitch in the head that has broken. Replace head.

You may have 2 x 2 port valves, in which case the head on the ch one will need replacing.

What's to prevent the modern woman from looking in a airing cupboard then? Better than being cold all day!
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • As state earlier, it's probably the 3 way valve and/or actuator. I had to replace ours recently as we couldn't have the hot water without the heating being on too - not very helpful in the summer!
