Cold showers are no fun, brrrr.....
But if the water coming out of your bath taps is hot and you just don't want to use loads of it to fill the bath, can you not get one of those jobbies that fits to the bath taps with a shower on the end of it (does anyone know what I mean? We used to have one before we got an electric shower). Bet Argos or similar do them?
Just while you wait for the LL to sort you out 'properly'.0 -
I cant share baths i have major hygiene hang-ups lol the romantic in me thinks that it sounds lovely but the crazy ocd me is screaming inside lol.
Yeah we are gonna get one of those tomorrow was gonna do it today but we were stuck in traffic for 3 hours only to be turned back by the police and not actually leaving the town we live in so great stuff!!
I usually am very energy efficient i put the cold water in and heat it up from that but even still i notice a major change on my bills when the bath is used which is a pity cos i love nothing more than a good old bubble bath!!0 -
Although the OP has hot water for a bath so the LL is fulfilling their legal requirement to provide hot water and washing facilities, the OP rented a house with a shower and a bath. Surely she can require the LL to repair the shower. There is not the same degree of urgency in repairing or replacing it but it still should be done, shouldn't it?0

I have to admit this one made me smile.
Many many years ago I was sent to boarding school in Germany. It was an old barracks if that paints the picture.
Cold showers were de rigeur, no questions and no prisoners taken!
It has stayed with me all my life and there have been so many times I've thanked heaven for the training.
This weather there is nothing more guaranteed to keep you warm than a cold shower. I've just had mine and I have had to turn the heating OFF as I now feel so warm. It is also very invigorating as said earlier in this thread.
Clearly some medical conditions may preclude this but on the whole I heartily recomend the practice of cold showering. I kid you not. :T0 -
You say that the LL was coming to check out the shower issue but "something came up" for you? If having a working shower is important to you surely you would have made every effort for one of you to be available?
Couple of things for you - is LL registered, as required in Scotland? You say that there are other repairs issues so have a look at PRHP here http://www.prhpscotland.gov.uk/prhp/1.html. Properties have to meet a Repairing Standard in Scotland. Note that you should always report repairs issues *in writing*, and keep a copy. If you do do it by phone initially, make sure to follow it up with a confirmatory letter.0 -
No she isn't registered she basically bought the house got a job in London and thought i know i will rent it out so it pays the mortgage sorry to sound so bitter but i am basically lol.
It was something urgent that came up and couldn't really get out of to be honest and shouldn't have to put off urgent stuff just because thats the day that suits her, to be honest in hindsight i wish i just had have cancelled the thing i had to do as she is probably back in London now and wont be up again until possibly xmas/new year time.
I do agree that cold showers can be very invigorating for some people but i am a total wimp if i am honest!!
She prefers things kept very informal and its possibly due to having a paper trail that may come back to bite her in the back side.
I think if its gets to the stage where she refuses the repairs which are required not just desired then we will have to either put it to her that either she does them or we will have to look at other properties, although i love this house i am just not willing to get stressed out every single time something goes wrong.
Thanks for the advice and suggestions it is much appreciated.

Oooh good luck to you!!0

Must say I think the forumites are giving the LL a bit of an easy time on this. The house came with a shower, and you can reasonably expect that that shower would work. And working to me includes it being able to provide hot water.
The value or not of cold showers isn't really relevant. The OP may want to have a cold bracing shower (brrrrr in Scotland) but it really should be a choice they are allowed to make!
OP, I presume if the flat had no shower you wouldn't have rented it, so it should have it for the whole time (barring reasonable repair delay) that you have the place.0 -
I haven't got anything useful to add regarding making the LL repair the shower / boiler / whatever is causing your problem. But in the meantime if the bath taps work ok and you don't want to fill up the bath because it's wasteful, how about this idea : Put a bucket under the tap, fill it with warm water and get a largish mug/measuring cup sort of thing that will hold about a pint or so at a time, pour the water over yourself with that. Once you get the hang of it, a bucket full of water would be enough, though depending on how long your hair is you might want to keep filling it up as you use the water so you'd be using maybe 1.5 or 2 bucket fulls.
Low tech but efficient solution, but hey that's how most of India does it, even in colder regions up in the mountains... (I never had a shower when I lived there either - your advantage is that at least you have heating in the house so the bathroom won't be quite as cold as mine was)... Anyway, that's how we "showered" after the boiler died.. you can always do it with water boiled on the stove or electric kettle, add cold until it's comfortable to shower with...0 -
Thanks for your reply kmmr thats absolutely correct, its actually quite funny i said the exact thing to my OH the other night i wouldn't have even came to see it if it did not have a shower!!!
To make matters worse now i cant even have a bath as the bath and bathroom sink are not draining away water and plumber cant come until next week as they are busy with frozen pipes!! Funnilly enough though the LL did not mention the shower and when brought up (on the phone) it was just a case of oh we will deal with that another time.
She isn't gonna be happy though as reported before to her the guttering has repairs needing done to them and because of the weather we have had there is quite large bits of ice hanging off - larger than houses with perfectly fine guttering. And as a result they have fallen through the back porch roof!! So now there is a few holes in it making it even more draughty than it already is.
Oh well is she has appropriate LL's insurance it shouldn't be an issue!!
