it accepts .mobi format and its own proprietary format - it will show up as a usb mass storage device and you just copy files over from your PC.

    See here for books: http://www.masalaboard.com/showthread.php/208649-E-BOOKS-Download-1000s-of-FREE-books!/page657

You may need a free program called Calibre - google it - to convert epubs/lits etc into .mobi format.

You can buy books from the Kindle store direct from the Kindle (over WiFi or 3G too if you have that model). You can just shop in the Kindle store from a PC and the books will be delivered over WiFi or 3G to the Kindle or you can download and transfer via USB.

If you already have some eBooks they can be transferred by USB or several types which are not directly supported can be emailed to the email address assigned to your Kindle and they will be converted and transferred to your device by WiFi free or downloaded and transferred over USB. Your own converted books over 3G cost 20p per MB.

See the Amazon web site for details on specific book types supported and what can be converted.

I suspect any common format will be OK one way or another - for example LIT aren't directly supported but there is a freeware LIT to PDF conversion program and PDFs are both directly supported or can be converted via email to native Kindle documents.

The only observation I have is that eBooks from Amazon don't represent much of a saving over paperback but there are shedloads of free out of copyright books from a number of sources.

Somewhat confused,as why anyone who is aware of a Kindle would not know where to download books from.

To be more helpful to the OP, why not download the Kindle application (from Amazon)to your PC and try it out, loads of free books in the Kindle store.

  • Take a look at MobileRead - lots of useful information there, especially in the forum.
  • There's loads of classic fiction:

Look at the 'Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought' section for lots more free books

I'm reading this at the moment (using my Kindle Android reader), it's pretty good ; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blood-Sweat-Tea-Adventures-Inner-city/dp/B002SDGLTG/ref=pd_sim_kinc_16
