and they allow people to move in with unusable gas fires? and you have a gas certificate?

yes. as long as the appliance is safely disconnected then it poses no risk to the tenant. They also have to attach a sticker/label advising not to reconnect the appliance.

Im trying to picture what the gas fire looks like, is there a picture on google images ( i know your a new user) so we could take a look

Is there a gas pipe that comes out of the wall that then attaches to the fire. Is this still connected? Is it "capped off"

Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm

Im evisioning you gas hob being on your work surface and a seperate fitted electric oven, is this right?

When you use your gas hob, what colour is the flame?

cant see anything comimg out of wall, capped off, I am going to buy a carbon monoxide alarm today, thanks for that suggestion!
yes, my hob is exatly as you describe, once lit a bright blue flame, with orange at the bit closest to the bit that ignites.

Do that, you cant be too careful!

Is your house draughty, is heat escaping.

I honestly dont know what else to suggest,

What is your price per unit on prepay- who are you with? We are with british gas.

in my old house I used to be on a prepayment meter. check with your gas supplier as you may be on a larger tariff than you need to be, also they may be debt from the previous owners that you might be paying off as well. EDIT - sorry, just read your original post again, so there is no debt? its strange that its taking that muchover a short space of time.

Can you not have the prepayment meter taken out? When I moved into my new house, it had prepayment meters for the gas and electric. Phoned Southern Electric and they switched them straight away, and it was free. I know British Gas charge (thats why we didnt take the one out at my old house) but its worth finding out. EDIT - is this what you mean by Npower charging you £600?? can you not switch energy suppliers again, like I said above, Southern Electric change them over for free.
You're so very special, I wish I was special

British Gas dont seem to charge as we have requested our meter be changed ( he came out, and couldnt do it for some reason, to do with our address being a ix-up) but they are certainly not charging us for it

  • So does having the hot water on effect your gas usage even if you are not running the taps?
