Calculation for how much i could save?

Hi

i might sound realy daft asking this but...

i am trying to work out how much i can save if i got a newer car.

I have a renault kangoo 1.9d i get around 45 mpg

I do 250 mile per week on the motorway and was looking to buy a something like a skoda fabia which says it does 70.6 mpg at best.

Is there a calculation that would work out how much i could save on fuel?

thanks

    Ok, anorak on....

Let us assume that 1 litre of petrol is £1.22- there are 4.546 litres in a gallon, multiply this(£1.22) by 4.546 = £5.546 per gallon.

250 miles divided by 45 (renault does 45 miles per gallon) = 5.55 gallons required- multiplied by £5.546= £30.81

250 miles divided by 70.6(allegedly the skoda does this- will discuss this in a minute)=3.541 gallons required-multiplied by £5.546= £19.63

    £30.81- £19.63= £11.83 saving!

However- just because the makers say that the skoda will do 70 to the gallon does not mean it will in daily driving- skoda will have achieved this in laboratory conditions and driving styles/ traffic/ condition of car will have an effect on the fuel consumption.

If you want a new car because the old one does not have the features you require, or is becoming unreliable, then a fabia is a good buy, but £12 a week saving is not really a deal maker, just another selling point.
    Hope this helps.

So based on an annual mileage of 13,000, that's a saving of £624 per year. I'll bet it cost's more than 3 times that amount to to swap the cars.

If you want a fancy new car that's fine, but swapping cars does not save money (unless you're going from a 5 litre V12 petrol to a 1.4 litre diesel econobox).

Exactly, anyone who thinks (or justifies) spending thousands of £ on a new car will save them money is an utter fool.

Unless the "new" car costs less than the old one then the savings will be zero.
