I googled the phone number and it is HSBC, they also knew correct figures from my account. Closing the account as we speak-off to the CO-OP! Nice letter of complaint on it's way, can anyone direct me to which areas of the data protection act they are breaching?

They haven't breached. They've spoken to the account holder, if I've understood correctly.

While their procedures as described leave them open to the possibility of breach, it hasn't actually happened in this case.
  • HSBC record all calls, do you could ask for a copy of the call. They should confirm half a detail such as your day and year of birth is 1st and 1980, please could you confirm the month, or asking you half your postcode before giving you the other half. That way both parties know they are speaking with the correct person. Hope this helps x

To clarify, the number is HSBC, according to Google, they called my home phone line so any member of my family could easily answer it. The person asked NO security questions other than "is this Mr ******" and then said the overdrawn amount-can you pay today etc etc.

I contacted HSBC through their secure messaging today-they said "we have no record of any calls being made to your home phone" and that the person calling would always "seek to clarify identity before disclosing personal information". So maybe they regard simply asking someone's name as being secure?? Not sure I agree with them.

Been a customer of theirs for 20+ years but going elsewhere.
