White Spirit out of Carpet?

Hello all!
I've had a shocking home improvement week! New double glazing installed but as a result of this there was a huge amount of mess in my flatmate's room. I got professional carpet cleaners in but the only thing that worked was white spirit - 16 litres of the stuff!
The whole flat now absolutely stinks of white spirit, particularly my flatmate's bedroom. She is really not happy and I don't blame her!
Any genius ideas for getting rid of the smell quickly? I've set up a dehumidifier in the room when I go out, and all the windows open when I'm in but it's done virtually nothing.
Thank you!

A dehumidifier will do virtually nothing on white spirit, I should imagine. Only airing will sort it. Be very aware of the risk of a fire, possibly igniting spontaneously - but taking hold very quicklyHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you have foam backed carpet the white spirit will rot it. I can't believe you used white spirit & so much - the stuff will ignite if yoy switch on a gas appliance, light a fag - whatever.
Sliced onion laid in a saucer gets rid of paint smells but goodness knows if that would work.0 -

who actually made the mess
if it was the window installers then , yes they owe you a new carpet or did you fit it yourself? what exactly needed 16 lts of w/s to clean up , if it was sealant then i don't think w/s would shift it anyway
the vapours from the white spirit are extremley dangerous , so i would probably bite the bullet and take the carpet up , it will take ages for the carpet to lose the smell0 -
I'm not worried about who is responsible, its the smell that worries me! Please don't worry everyone - I'm not at risk of igniting, the vast majority of the white spirit is long gone it is merely the smell that remains, I've had candles burning and nothing has happened!
Sounds like I'm just going to have to wait for the smell to go, and try to pay off my flatmate!0 -
I'd replace the carpet and look to get costs back from fitter/cleaner/insurer as appropriate. That amount of solvent must be a carcinogenic risk.0

Of course the white spirit is still there, both the backing and the floor underneath must be saturated from that treatment. New carpet time.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
