Santander Zero Card Credit Refund Help Needed

We've recently had a large refund credited to our Zero Card (flight costs refunded at last by Ryan Air) which had a nil balance. Effectively Santander now owe us this money but state they are not able to refund via cheque or directly to our current account and that the only way for us to obtain the money is to spend it on the card or withdraw it from a cash machine.
Can they do this? And wouldn't they start charging us interest the day we withdrew the money if we chose that option? What would happen to the credit balance if we chose to close the account?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Try calling them again and speak to someone else. Sounds like you got bad advice.
Speak to their "customer loyalty" people (use 0151 264 8725 if you want to avoid an 0845 number) and tell them that if the only way to get your money back is to close the card then that's what you'd like to do
See how long it takes them to sort out a refund then

I have a similar issue with the ASDA card - run by santander.
I have a credit balance, which they say will take upto 28 days to return to my bank account. Totally unacceptable!0 -
I dont understand who told you you couldn't get that transferred back to your current account?
And if it was branch that told you you won't incur interest on the cash withdrawal they need more training lol! you always get charged a fee whether its in credit or not!
Call card services and tell them your accounts in credit and they'd sort the transfer to your current account straight away. it won't take 28 days either it usually only takes 3-4 with a max of 7 working days.
Some people eh...i hate it when customers get the wrong info!
How much are you in credit by anyway?
I'll do it myself if u want! ring card services 0845 602 1582 and ask for ext 837680
