bath and shower screen - looking for a bargain

I posted a couple of weeks ago about the hole in my bath caused by the shower screen 'falling off' (according to the lodger but I don't believe her).
I have been trying to get plumbers round to give me quotes but haven't had much joy. They either don't turn up or don't send a quote to me which is driving me nuts! I got one this week for replacing the bath, shower screen and bath panel and it is £1700 which seems crazy.
A colleague at work has offered for her man to undertake the work if I buy the bath, shower screen and tiles but I have no idea what constitutes good quality when buying a bath.
Any recommendations for places to buy a bath and shower screen that are good quality but in the sale or just a good deal?
I have had a look on the b&q website and loads of them have really poor reviews and the P&P costs for some of the online retailers I have looked at are massive.

Go and visit your local plumbers merchant and see what he can do for you. Labour costs should be no more than £ 500 including ripout, replace and tiling round bath / screen.

If your after a good quality new bath check out the Carron Swallow, its 8mm acrylic and the bath used in many top hotels apparently. Ive got one in my bathroom and its SO much better than the budget stuff from b&q etc. I bought mine for £125 from a local supplier but have seen them online for a similar price. Its available with or without the grips. A nice MDF white bath panel cost me £50.
Shower screen wise check this out http://www.bathroommarquee.co.uk/outasight.htm
Ive got one and found it to be great! As Keystone said £500 labour should easily cover what you need doing, check out checkatrade etc to find a reliable local plumber to do the work for you.
Hope that helps0 -

Thanks that's really helpful I will have a look. The problem is finding a tradesperson to do it. Considering there is a recession on they are all totally choca and I haven't been able to get many round to give me quotes and the ones that do come round, the majority don't follow it up with quotes. I just want to be clean!!If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

I have finally got the new bath in and the shower screen should be done on Monday. I didn't give any detail about the type of bath I wanted and lo and behold there is packaging for a carron swallow in my garden. I hope I am as pleased with it as you are with yours

I'm also interested in the Caron Swallow, so do let us know what you think of it? Is it really hotel quality for that price? Thanks0
