I have only just opened the current acc with them I now know why everybody is talking of their total incompetence.

It really is beyond belief how untrained these people are.
The situation you describe is so stunningly basic it's extraordinary.

I don't know why Santander are so poor. But I'd love to see the design of their staff training courses because that may be where the problems start.

I was told head office would send me forms to fill in and return.

I bet you a tenner that these forms do not arrive, on either this, or the next two times that you ask for them.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

I have been dealing with some A&L accounts that have been absorbed.

Staff in branch do their best but systems are a mess,

Don't try dealing by post is can take 3 weeks for letters to come.

All the training for the new Abbey computer system was to be done in branch using interactive training.

The problem is that a lot of managers are so focused on sales sales sales that they do not give staff the time to take this training, and merely give them enough time to pass the test and "tick a box".

It totally depends on which branch you use.

The branch I work in scores 90-100% every month without fail on customer service.

A former Abbey branch 5 minutes up the road scores 50-60 each month.

I have never been trained in or worked in finance but I know about R85s. Does that mean something as basic as getting gross interest needs a three day, off site, training jolly for me?
No, I'm afraid it's more to do with lack of interest (motivation) than needing training, for anyone in customer facing finance. AND Santander people are seriously disinterested in learning anything.

    You are wrong.

The R85 system has been abolished in Santander we now have a paperless system.

    And don't generalise.

Come on though, it doesn't matter whether there's a phyiscal piece of paper or not. It's still a gross interest registration whether it's made verbally or involves a written form.

Given that a good 25% (my estimate) of the population don't earn enough to pay tax I'd expect such registrations to be common place.

The Halifax branches I used to manage would see 3 or 4 R85 forms every day. When they went paperless I'd guess the number of requests stayed the same. Gross interest declarations are not rare and for call centres and branch staff not to know what to do is utterly shocking.

But presumably (as Halifax # ..... who've been doing this for years) your system then issues a letter to the customer setting out what they've signed up to? It basically incorporates the R85 declaration ........... as that's an HMRC requirement.

    # ..... which is rather better than Lloyds - where you have to find a Branch to file one. Post it in .... and it hit's the bin rather than the account.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • I always just take a form in no matter which bank I'm dealing with (aside from ones where there are no branches), it's quick and simple, and avoid all the mess of them not knowing what to do when you say you want to register for gross interest.
