New car battery

The cold weather is here and I need a new battery. I have 1.7d Astra and have checked online @ Halfords-
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_264215_langId_-1_categoryId_165762
and the cheapest they do is £94.99. Ive had a look at Kwik fit and they do one for £85.50 fitted all though fitting one myself is not a problem. Surley I can get one cheaper than this any susggestions?

    Scrap yard £10 - £15

Charge it when you get home if you have a good charger it should tell you it's condition, But ask the scrappy for atleast a 30 day exchange guarantee written onto the receipt. Some scrappies will have a hot wire resistance battery tester which will give a good indication of which battery is strongest. If you want one they cost about £30 from machine mart.

If the battery lasts 30 days on your car in this weather it's probably going to be a good battery and may last a few years.

If it's £95 at Halfords I would expect it to be about £55 - £65 at a motor factors.

Phone a few motor factors for a local supplier.

There are a few on-line that deliver

    eg: £63 http://www.thebatteryguys.co.uk/vehicle_filters/458729

Depends how beefy you want to go the more cranking apps and capacity the more expensive the tend to get so you need to make sure you compare like for like

Loads here for pricing against brand

Not worth buying " online " IMO, what happens if you need to return it under warranty?

It will cost an arm and a leg to send it back.

    Buy a good brand.

    Buy locally.

Nah...get down to the local parts guy & get any battery that's suitable!
Most come with a 2 year guarentee.

If I remember correctly "worried jim" is running an old Astra on veg oil....a good brand battery would be worth nearly as much as the car ;)

Sorry jim if I've got that wrong :o

Go to your local motor factors. Even on a bad day, with a partsman anti-public, you'll get a decent heavy duty battery (you need it) at much less than ebay or halfords.
  • i'll echo the same as most. get to a good local motor factors.

    i priced 2 batteries recently 1 for a petrol 206 and the other for a diesel 206.
halfords wanted £87 and £95 respectively. dingbro (trade only) motor factors wanted £25 and £29. this was the second best option, they had ones a few quid cheaper again for both models, these came with 3 year warranty.
i only bought these a few weeks ago so prices should be relevant.

i also bought as few batteries from a motor factor (public and trade) similar size but were varta and cost £40 each.

so considerable savings to be made over halfords here, even using the trade card option.

Another vote for the local motor factors.

Halfords wanted £109 for a standard (75Ah, 570 CCA) battery for our car, ended up paying £68 for the heavy duty (95Ah, 770 CCA) version with a 4 year warranty.
