Car insurance cancellation extra charge

Options
I've just cancelled my car insurance and when I rang up I asked what the outstanding debt on the insurance and they said I had to pay £47.50 cancellation fee so i agreed and when I checked my bank £137 was taken. when I spoke to the insurance company they said this was for the additional days outstanding on the policy but I wasn't advised this would be taken on the phone. They said it is advised in the policy which it is I was just wondering if they can take this extra charge without advising me as I asked for the outstanding debt when i rang up??

  • I've just cancelled my Car Insurance with the post office and i didn't get charged a thing, i was on a monthly plan.

Also if you feel a Direct Debit has been taken out unfairly approach your bank, they will get that money back then shut down the Direct debit in question, it's exactly what they have just done for me with my previous insurance company.

I would think it is how you worded the question. For example, if you asked what the cancellation charge is then they would say £47.50. If you asked the total cost for cancellation then you would expect them to give you the cancellation fee and outstanding premium and any addons you had (like AA/RAC).
