Santander - latest outrage

Life is too short to list the stress, hassle and extraordinary incompetence I have experienced since Santander took over A&L.
But I have to share the latest.

Last month via online banking I scheduled (three weeks or so in advance - I set it up as soon as I get the bill) a transfer from my savings account to my current account to cover the payment of my credit card bill, also pre-scheduled to go on the same date.

The bill was paid on the right date (phew) but, guess what, the money in from the savings account to cover it arrived a day late. Santander then charged me 50p for my 'overdraft'.

I don't care about 50p but what I do care about is that today in response to my complaint I have received a letter from Santander saying that payments from savings account to current account scheduled via online banking now take 'up to three working days' to arrive. SINCE WHEN?

I have had Internet banking for donkeys' years, with A&L and previously with First Direct (how I miss them, but their savings rates were so lousy) and the whole basis of it has always been that you can set up scheduled transfers from your savings account for specific dates in the future, and the money will be in your current account on that date, not some other subsequent date of the bank's choosing.

Not on Planet Santander, folks....

Doubtless they issued you with some new terms and conditions to advise you of the change and you didn't quite get to section 43 subsection 4 clause a to spot it.

One of the problems with bank mergers is that they don't always make things easier for customers.

I was banking with Abbey 5 years ago, before they were part of Santander and they were screwing up horribly then (see my thread above) so you cant blame it all on the merger.

Switching my account from then has been a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
  • Thanks for the support folks. I received a further letter today confirming this is the new policy. I'll post a new thread as this is a major change to how their Internet Banking works and people should be aware.

Not sure it is new. ISTRC in the 'old days' transfers between deposit and current accounts taking 3 days at least in one direction - can't remember which.
