Yet another tale of woe

So everything was going really well. We found the flat of our dreams. We found an FTB for our place. Our vendors found a place with no chain. Solicitors were slowly moving along with all the paperwork. Today, the solicitor tells me that the exchange will likely take place next week. I get all giddy with excitement thinking about xmas in the new pad.

Then vendor phones me telling me her vendor (top of the chain) has had some emotional crisis and now doesn't want to move until January. That's 2 months later than we all thought we would be done and dusted. Now our vendor is panicking that we or our buyer might drop out. I am panicking too and also bitterly disappointed that we won't be in there by xmas. The one at the top of the chain is the only one who hasn't any money invested at this point, and despite being told how gutted we all are is standing her ground.

What is wrong with people that they can't see how potentially damaging their actions are to a whole string of people? Sorry this is more of a whinge than a question or looking for advice, just really really depressed now.

Sending commiserations. Try to be positive (I know it is hard) - but you can still exchange next week - it is just completion that is a long way off.

Just a question if top of the chain is chain free - why should an emotional crisis delay completion. Is she in the property and vacating then?

Oh dear - you just can't factor human emotion into planning can you? Just try and ensure the completion is early Jan - at least if you exchange you can relax over Xmas knowing you will be moving. You can also get any new items for your house in the New year sale before moving in?

Aw, cheer up, you can still have a good Christmas in your existing home & have the excitement of a new home in the new year when lots of people are suffering the January blues.

Perhaps the crisis for the lady holding up the sale is serious.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Thanks for the commiserations - especially Goldbyron reminding me of the January sales aspect :)

I've recovered slightly since I first got the news this afternoon. After all, it's not as if anyone has actually pulled out yet (touch wood) and we can exchange sooner, we just can't complete til Jan so it will delay things by 6 - 8 weeks. I can't really mention the details of the crisis at the top of the chain that has led to this as the circumstances are very specific and I think people in my chain use this site!!! But they were meant to move in with family and a family crisis has occured which means they can't until January. Poo. Bah humbug. Ah well, january sales watch out!!
  • Bit of an update.....

We are now all rushing to get exchanged as soon as possible before anything else can go wrong! We are hoping this will be by the end of next week, although our completion date won't be until first week of January.

I have had two more problems since then.

The first was an environmental search by our purchaser which was written in very scary language and basically implied that our house is built on a landfill site (it's actually over half a km away and has been in active for years). This scared us and the buyer, but a £30 fee to the local council later and our buyer is calm again.

Second thing to go wrong relates to the title deeds of our house, it seems the previous solicitor made an error and an update wasn't sent to the Land Registry - so now THAT has to get sorted out before we can exchange too.

It's just issue after issue. To think that everything seemed so perfectly straightforward until just one week ago!...... Fingers crossed for exchange next week
