been paid too much TCs

here goes...

ds is in FE and i've been getting CB and TC for him.

It turns out that i shouldn't have had these recently as he left education and then returned- I did explain everything to both CB office and TC office months ago. I heard nothing at all, so I called them recently to chase it up- if I hadn't phoned it'd have gone on for much longer.

Anyway, i've been overpaid- & I'm worried as to how i will need to pay this back, do they allow you to pay it back over a period of time- i hope they do, this is worrying me, & DS only has 6/7 months to go at college. it's an awful feeling having been paid money that i shouldn't have had.

does anyone know what is the best way I can do this
many thanks

  • Didn't want to read and run but am not certain of how repayment works if you are not receiving any further cb or tc payments.
My sil had an overpayment and they are taking it back at around £10 per month out of her payments. I know someone else who had all their tax credits go towards repayment (they could afford this though!).:)
I'm sure your best bet is to ring and come to a payment arrangement per month. I hope someone who knows a bit more about it will come along and offer more factual rather than anecdotal advice!

  • I was overpaid child tax credits a few years ago - although I informed them of a change in circumstances, they didn't update their records. I went from being part of a married couple to a single mum on IS, so I still can't work out how I was overpaid!

Anyway, I had to pay back by direct debit over a period of months. My ex was also supposed to pay, but he was given slips to pay money at the Post Office - which of course, he didn't

I was told at the time that the full amount (£972) had to be repaid within one year, whether it was me or my ex paying. We were both equally liable, but I paid the bulk of the money because of the direct debit.

My overpayment was divided over 12 months, i think if you discuss it with them you will be able to arrange a repayment plan, they like to have it set up as a direct debit though.
