Problems With Boiler

I have a Potterton Suprima 70 boiler less than 5 years old. The problem I am experiencing is the pilot light. Somedays it lights up and heats the water and heating other days it wont light at all leaving me without hot water and heating.
When I refer to the manual it suggests pressing the 'Restart' button to ignite the pilot light but after 3 attempts it locks out. So I have to then switch off from the mains and switch back on and the process starts again.

Any idea what the problem may be? Is this something I can do myself buy purchasing the parts or should I leave this to a Corgi Registered engineer an dpay over the odds.

I've been quoted £195 from Potterton which includes engineer call out plus parts, £145 with British Gas for engineer call out plus parts.

Potterton's quite often seem to need new PCB's from what i've been able to gather.

Is it the electronic ignition version or is the pilotalifgt all the time??

Could just be the thermocouple if its not an electronic ig. They are £10 - £15 I think. Easy to git ig you know how....... these usually just pack up and your fault sounds intermittant.
Try local heating firms for a cheaper engineer attendance.

I heard a rumour of potterton supplying hundreds of boilers with faulty pcb boards.
My work mate had a problem with his and did a lot of digging around. He contacted corgi who confirmed this and also enlightened him on a big court case due to erupt over this.
My mate kicked up such as fuss, potterton came out and replaced it for free.

Don't know if yours is the same model though.

You are correct, and british gas stopped installing these boilers about 2 years ago,so many problems.
A thankyou is payment enough .
  • Potterton have recently introduced a new replacement pcb kit for the suprima. It comes with a complete wiring harness & control panel.

  • Ah I have just had a problem with the PCB on a Potterton Lynx2 boiler. This is the second time in about 6 years and last time we paid a plumber £200 to replace it. This time I searched the internet and found new boards between £140 and £200 for this boiler however yesterday I found this place
    http://www.cetltd.com/default.asp?let=pcb
Which does reconditioned boards for £40 + vat and the old board. Comes with 12 month guarantee Because its not too far away from us we went and collected it-we have been freezing after all. Its now installed and working perfectly.
To add insult to injury the guy there said that the board that we took in was already repaired so I guess the plumber who replaced the original PCB ripped us off!
