Rogue emails being sent from my email address

Options
I've virus scanned to death - all not finding anything but seems that another spam email has been sent to my whole address book.

What do I do next? tried all the four steps in the malware guide - is it speak to ISP or email account owner next?

Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.... life is a WIP.

What AV are you using? Are you sure that it's been hacked and not just address spoofing? Do the rogue emails show in your 'Sent' folder? If not, they're not being sent from your PC.
Which email software are you using? Have you changed your email password as a precaution?

how do you access your email via webmail or a program on your computer, change your email password
  • Thank you - I use AOL for email and access it through their website. No, can't see rogue emails as showing in my sent box.

    Email password now changed.

    thanks

  • Download and install malwarebytes just in case:
    Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 - FileHippo.com
Go to UPDATE tab and click CHECK FOR UPDATES. Then run a QUICK SCAN. Remove everything it finds and post log here.

Go back to UPDATE tab and click CHECK FOR UPDATE. Then run a FULL SCAN. Remove everything it finds and post log here.

    Download and Install hijackthis: www.hijackthis.de/en
Once the programme is opoen press the top button. This will create a log within seconds - please post here.

Then they're probably not being sent from your account then, but someone has harvested your address book.
Run MBAM as advised above and make sure you have a decent AV program (not AVG, Norton or McAfee IMHO).

  • Some spammers are clever in that they change the from address to a random address in someone's address book. So, PC A has a virus and sends emails to user B but changes the "from" address to random address C - which is you.

Then B contacts C to say "Oi, your PC is hacked, you keep sending me spam"

So, user C virus scans their machine but can't find anything while user A keeps sending out spam.
