So I have the leads all connected, hdmi and 3.5mm jack but all I get on the TV screen is the Mac stars pattern with blue/red background.
What do I do next?
Mac runs on Snow Leopard.

Sounds like you're connected ok - your computer is probably set to do screen spanning. This means the desktop is extended across two screens - you should be able to move your curser or drag windows off the right edge of your macbook screen onto the TV.0

How old is the mac? If its a newer one (may this year onwards maybe??) then should only need the hdmi for picture and sound? Mine works ok.
Go to setting preferences (think thats it?) in the dock and select the display icon, there are settings there to detect display and set what side your tv is on so your cursor flows that way etc...
sorry if a bit vague, just got one a couple of months ago and not in front of it at the moment!
