you can take the HDD out and look - the flap is on the bottom if it is a fat model.

also you can take the HDD out and put it in a computer to wipe (erase) you should esp do this if it has sensitive info on it (such as PSN login passwords or facebook accounts)
  • blimey....how on earth do you erase a hard drive....sounds way too technical

you dont really need to, I'm just being overly paranoid that someone unscrupulous may get at it.

but if you did want to wipe it get Darik's Boot And Nuke then you want to just hook the hard drive up to your PC (or if you have a laptop you can take out your drive and put the ps3s HDD in its place, then boot your computer and erase, after you have done take out the ps3 HDD and put in your laptops hard drive and your computer will not know anything has happened) then run the nuke program then select the hard drive I don't know of any other program that will do this while the drive is still in the ps3,
sounds more complex than it is
  • think I need someone slightly more knowing in this field than myself, but many thanks for your advice as I was worried with regards to info held on the console, my son wanted to keep his saved game data but i think this may have to go into cyberspace heaven ;)

  • ylod can be repaired quite easily. where abouts are you in yorkshire?
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.
  • As above, YLOD is pretty easy to fix if you have the know-how and equipment, check about for a good repair place in your area and get it fixed rather than selling it. Should cost no more than £40 I'd say (I charge £30 myself, as an example) although I have seen places charging up to £100 (waaaay to much!).
  • Loads of ps3 YLOD repair stuff on youtube - gilksy1 is a UK type

  • we had someone look at it....they said it cant be repaired because it had warped or something inside???

i am not techically minded for all this stuff, are any of them unrepairable without entailing a massive cost?

    Thanks for your responses guys
  • Not sure exactly what they mean by warped. I've seen ones where the case has warped due to the heat, which makes them a bit of a pain to open up, or where the motherboard has warped, which means it needs to be straightened out with a stint in an oven. I'd say get a second (free) opinion on it, I haven't come across one with YLOD that I haven't been able to fix yet.

But if you do sell it on eBay you'll probably get around £70 for it, although this fluctuates both up and down.
