Being an early broadband adopter and a forgetful silver surfer to boot I can't remember if I ever paid an additional service fee to BT for my dial up connection. I recall having an ISDN line which my employer paid for but I don't remember having an ADSL line and if I did whether I paid for it.
The reason for asking is an elderly neighbour has been given an old laptop by her daughter so they can keep in touch via email. Its a nice thought but when I mentioned broadband and the extra costs associated with it was obvious she didn't see the value. She is a very astute lady and I am sure would enjoy the new challenge of email but on a limited budget every week I can see why she thinks it an expense too far.
Is there anyway to connect via her standard BT land line at little or no cost?
Thanks
Tony

The initial dial up worked << You had a phone line from BT you paid rental for >> You could then take out a contract with an ISP at XX£ per month or more usually in those days where charged something like 1.5p per min for internet access charged by the ISP to BT who charged you on your phone bill .
No cost no>> little cost is around £6 a month .
Alternative to keep in touch at no cost would be to use a public library computers .
OOHPS forgot Dial Up is still available so that may be worth looking at from BTas cheap method .

If she is a neighbour, can you not share Internet access wirelessly with her?0

I thought that they still had no roll over month to month so you lose what you don't use and work out at £120 a year minimum .

Why not try this, when I read your post that is the first thing I thought of too?0 -
It's only £6.49 a month for the first 3 months, then it goes up to £10.79 or £12.99 a month after that depending on where you live.
No it doesn't. If you are on a Market 3 exchange then the price is £6.49 throughout the contract (I did say 'as long as she is on the right exchange').No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
