Does N&P actually require you to send in paper ID?

Hi there,
I am interested in opening the N&P Building Society account sometime in the future to take advantage of their new features (free foreign withdrawals) which start next year.
I had a quick look through their applications page and saw this on top:
"To approve your application we will perform a credit check using the details you provide and, if approved in principle, we will ask you to verify your identity by sending us 2 forms of ID."
On the other hand, in their "Proving your identity" page, it says:
"Electronic verification is undertaken for most customers but unfortunately it is not always possible to verify someone via this method e.g. you may have recently moved home, or have little or no credit. In this case we would need you to provide paper identification documents."
Has anybody here managed to get the account fully opened without having to send in the paper IDs? Just thinking about the hassle of getting passports/driving licenses certified by professional people!
Thanks!
